Pujols, aka 'the worst player in baseball,' ties Thome on all-time HR list
The same day future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols was candidly referred to as the worst player in baseball in an article from ESPN's FiveThirtyEight, the slugger responded in grand fashion.
Pujols went deep twice in Wednesday's 10-8 win against the Oakland Athletics and, in the process, tied Hall of Fame slugger Jim Thome for seventh on baseball's all-time home run list with 612.
His four RBIs put him at 1,900 for his career, three shy of tying Willie Mays for 10th all time.
Though Pujols continues to move up baseball's prestigious ranks, it's likely been a season he'd prefer to forget in general. As FiveThirtyEight notes, Pujols has been baseball's least valuable player in 2017, providing minus-1.8 WAR following Wednesday's game.
The 37-year-old has posted a .232/.278/.387 slash line and a career-worst 74 wRC+ in 122 games this year. At least his power has remained intact - he's second on the Los Angeles Angels with 21 home runs this year.
