Report: Brewers showing interest in Verlander, Cubs monitoring situation
The Milwaukee Brewers could make a big splash as they enter baseball's arms race at the trade deadline.
The team is reportedly interested in acquiring Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander, according to the Detroit Free Press' Anthony Fenech.
The Brewers join the Houston Astros among teams that have reportedly expressed interest in the 34-year-old right-hander. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs are apparently waiting in the wings, potentially considering a push to land the veteran to complement an already sterling - though underperforming - rotation.
The Tigers are reportedly willing to include cash in any deal for Verlander, giving them a better chance to unload him. He's guaranteed $56 million over the next two seasons and currently mired in an uneven campaign.
Reports of renewed interest in Verlander come a day after he put together one of his best starts this season. He went seven innings against the Kansas City Royals, allowing two earned runs with eight strikeouts and just one walk.
Verlander's next start is scheduled for July 24, also against the Royals. If he's not traded by then, another strong performance could sweeten the pot.
