Report: Brewers showing interest in Athletics' Gray, Blue Jays' Happ

After the Chicago Cubs made a deal to acquire Jose Quintana, the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers are mulling over their options.

The Brewers are showing interest in a pair of starting pitchers in Sonny Gray and J.A. Happ according to a report from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Gray's name has come up in the rumor mill since the offseason, when he was believed to be among the best pitchers available via trade along with Quintana.

That being said, it will likely take an impressive package to convince the Oakland Athletics to part with Gray. The 27-year-old starter has a 3.72 ERA and 3.46 FIP through 84 2/3 innings and is under team control through the 2019 season.

The Toronto Blue Jays may have a more easily attainable asset for the Brewers in Happ. The 34-year-old lefty is due $13 million next year and has a 3.54 ERA and 4.42 FIP through 61 innings.

Of course, according to Rosenthal's sources, it is "highly unlikely" Happ gets moved by the Blue Jays - who presently appear to be looking to contend.

Whether the Brewers - who entered the 2017 campaign with very little in the way of expectations - actually move toward buying for a postseason push remains to be seen. However, at just $63 million, the Brewers opened the year with the lowest payroll in the majors, and could afford to take on controllable pieces if they're willing to part with the requisite prospects.
