Reds sign Hunter Greene to reported record-breaking bonus

After taking it down to the wire of Friday's deadline, the Cincinnati Reds officially announced they've agreed to a deal with two-way high-school phenom Hunter Greene, the second overall pick in June's draft.

Greene will reportedly receive a record-breaking $7.23-million bonus from the Reds, according to Jim Callis of MLB.com. That figure represents the largest bonus ever given to a high-school pitcher, per MLB.com's Mark Sheldon.

Greene, who was committed to UCLA before agreeing to his deal with the Reds, obliterated the record set just two weeks ago by the 2017 draft's fourth overall selection, fellow two-way star Brendan McKay, who came to terms with the Tampa Bay Rays for just over $7 million.

The 17-year-old was drafted primarily as a pitcher, but the Reds are keeping the door open for Greene - who has also played shortstop - to develop as a hitter as well.
