It appears the contract extension was well warranted.
San Diego Padres first baseman Wil Myers became the second player in team history to hit for the cycle in Monday's 5-3 win against the Colorado Rockies, joining former outfielder Matt Kemp who, coincidentally, completed the feat against the Rockies in 2015.
The 26-year-old started the game with a single before notching a double and home run. His triple in the eighth inning off left-hander Mike Dunn landed him in the record books. He finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBIs.
The first cycle of 2017 is also the earliest it has been accomplished in a season since Brad Wilkerson - who hit for the cycle twice in his career - did it April 6, 2005.
Myers, who was awarded a six-year, $83-million extension in the offseason, has started the new year with a bang. In the club's first eight games including Monday's stellar performance, he's combined to a slash line of .382/.382/.794 with 13 hits, three home runs, and seven RBIs.
