Padres' Ryan Schimpf: Starts 2017 with bang

Rotowireโ€ข9 years ago

Schimpf went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's Opening Day loss to the Dodgers.

Analysis:

The Padres' starting third baseman got his 2017 season started on the right foot. Schimpf's homer was the lone bright spot in an otherwise uneventful offensive day for San Diego. The fact the he got a start against a southpaw -- homering off the best lefty in the game, no less -- shows the confidence manager Andy Green has in the 28-year-old. Schimpf was already considered a viable deep and NL-only option, but he could be worth a look in mixed formats as a power bat, especially in leagues where he's retained second-base eligibility.
