John Kruk, the three-time-All-Star-turned-ESPN-analyst, was known more for his hitting than his defense throughout his decade-long stint in the majors, but the 55-year-old was making plays Thursday in Williamsport, Pa., snagging a foul ball that sailed into the broadcast booth during some opening-round action in the 2016 Little League World Series.
Though some chided Kruk's lack of defensive ability back in the day, Jim Fregosi - Kruk's manager with the Philadelphia Phillies from 1991-94 - regarded the portly West Virginia native as a plus defender at first base.
"Kruk is an average outfielder and an excellent first baseman," Fregosi told Ross Newhan of the Los Angeles Times in 1992. "He really has an awareness on the field."
