Vin Scully's voice is as recognizable as Babe Ruth's name.
Tuesday proved to be his final home-opening broadcast, and, as usual, he provided fans with legendary call after legendary call.
From a brief history lesson on Socrates to comparing an Arizona player with beef, here are some of the best calls from Scully's last Dodgers home opener.
On Welington Castillo coming up to bat: "And now here is the beef man, Welington Castillo."
Following a Castillo single: "Wellington Castillo singles. He has nothing to 'beef' about."
On Pedro Baez's fastball after Nick Ahmed's homer: "Pedro Baez throws hard, but it doesn't mean very much."
On Yasiel Puig's slide: "'The 'Wild Horse' looked more like an octopus. One hand going here, one hand going there."
On a Baez changeup to Phil Gosselin: "Terrific changeup. Boy that arm was flying toward the plate, and out of it came a soap bubble."
On sharing the field with Dodger legends during the pregame: "All those great players, and I'm allowed to go on the same field with them for a moment, it is an amazing feeling."
On serving up a 3-0 fastball to Paul Goldschmidt: "The count when (Paul) Goldschmidt hit the home run: three balls and no strikes. Boy, you talk about throwing a lamb chop to a lion."
On D-Backs outfielder Socrates Brito, with a brief history of Socrates the philosopher:
I was talking about him earlier, a Greek philosopher, smartest man probably in Greece, started teaching, and the government didn't like what he was teaching, they put him in jail. They tell me, well at least I read, that he could've escaped and he wouldn't do it. He said, 'I wanna go to trial, and prove that they were wrong, and then I want a dinner every night, free.'
It gets better ...
He stayed in jail and eventually drank the hemlock. I guess back in Rome that's the same thing as we say 'well, he must have had the Kool-Aid.' Well, in 470 B.C., or whatever it was, he drank the hemlock. One thing I did look up, so I might as well just tell you, our man Socrates drank the hemlock and they said you would drink it, and you would continue to walk around in your cell and you'd start feeling numb all throughout your body and eventually, adios. But what in the heck is hemlock? That's what bothered me.
When Brito struck out: "For those of you that care at all, it's of the parsley family and the juice from that little flower, that poisonous plant, that's what took Socrates away."
Following Brito's RBI triple: "Socrates Brito feeds the Dodgers the hemlock."
