 The Marlins have played only 18 games entering this series, second fewest in MLB (St. Louis -- 14). Yet Miami tops all clubs in total players used (48) and pitchers used (30). The Nationals have played 21 games, tied for third fewest in the majors.

 Miami was swept by the Mets at home, and has now lost five straight games, getting outscored 30-11 in those games. Marlins batters have struck out at least 10 times in all five games, tied for the third-longest such streak in franchise history, behind a six-game streak in 2009 and a seven-game streak last season.

 The Nationals are coming off a two-game split with the Braves in Atlanta, improving to 5-4 in their last nine after opening the season 4-8. The Nats collected 17 hits in Tuesday's win over Atlanta, their third such game this season -- only one other team has multiple games with 17+ this year (Arizona, 2).

 Luis Garcia had three hits on Tuesday against Atlanta, and now has six hits, three runs, four RBI and a home run in his first four career games. Only one other player in franchise history has matched those numbers through four games -- Mike Lansing in 1993.

 Elieser Hernandez will start for Miami, coming off a nine-strikeout, zero-walk performance in just 5.0 innings against Atlanta on Sunday. He's the first pitcher in Marlins history with at least nine strikeouts and no walks in five or fewer innings.

 Patrick Corbin allowed five runs (all earned) in 5.0 innings in Baltimore on Saturday, just the second time in his last 14 starts that he's allowed more than three runs. Since the start of last season, Corbin has had a quality start in 15 of 18 starts at home.

Right-hander Max Scherzer, a seven-time All-Star and a three-time Cy Young Award winner, will try to get his Washington Nationals back on track on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against the visiting Miami Marlins.
Scherzer (2-1, 3.71 ERA) is coming off perhaps his poorest performance of the season. He allowed a season-worst five runs in seven innings but he also struck out 10 batters in a 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.

WASHINGTON (AP)  Sixto Sanchez allowed six hits over five innings to win his major league debut, and the Miami Marlins defeated the Washington Nationals 5-3 on Saturday night to earn a split of a doubleheader.
''It was exciting to watch him pitch and see his stuff,'' manager Don Mattingly said. ''It's fun to watch, and it's going to be fun to watch him grow. He'll continue to get better as time goes.''
