 The Blue Jays clinched a playoff spot with last night's 4--1 win over the Yankees.  Prior to 2020, Toronto had reached the postseason only twice—in 2015 and 2016—since winning back-to-back World Series (1992--93), and the tough AL East was partly to blame.  The Jays posted a winning record nine times in 17 seasons from 1998 to 2014 without a trip to the playoffs.

 The Orioles' 13--1 win at Fenway Park last night was their biggest road win this season.  In fact, over the past three years, Baltimore won only one other road game by 12 or more runs: 14--2 at KC (8/30/2019).

 Taijuan Walker has a 1.54 in five starts for Toronto, which ranks third in the AL (minimum 20.0 IP) since his debut for the Blue Jays on Aug. 29, behind Dallas Keuchel (0.45) and Carlos Carrasco (1.41).

 Jorge Lopez has won two of his four starts this month (2--1, 3.57 ERA), which is consistent with his history: a 7--4 career record in September, compared to a 2--14 mark in all other months combined.

 Ryan Mountcastle's .325 batting average would be the fourth highest in franchise history among rookies with at least 100 at-bats.  The last Orioles rookie with 100+ ABs and a batting average that high was Al Bumbry (.337 in 1973).

 Cavan Biggio made his MLB debut on May 24, 2019.  Since that date, he ranks third in the majors with 110 walks, behind Juan Soto (122) and Carlos Santana (119). Yasmani Grandal and Bryce Harper are tied with Biggio for third.

Blue Jays hope to improve playoff seed against Orioles

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP)  Randal Grichuk and Travis Shaw homered, Nate Pearson returned from an elbow injury to earn his first major league win and the playoff-bound Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-5 Friday night.
Shaw narrowly missed a multihomer game, hitting a double in the seventh that struck the top of the wall in right field and bounced back into play.
