 The Dodgers (33) and Padres (31) are No. 1 and No. 2 in baseball in wins this season. The Dodgers are poised to be the No. 1 seed in the National League, and if things end like they are right now they would face the San Francisco Giants (2nd wild card) in the Wild-Card round. The Padres are No. 4 (best second-place team) and would face the Miami Marlins (No. 5 -- 2nd best 2nd-place team).

 The Dodgers have won 16 of their last 22 games at Petco Park, the best road record for any National League team at any opponent since 2018 (minimum 10 games). The Dodgers have had 10 different pitchers pick up those 16 wins, led by the since-departed (traded to Tor.) Ross Stripling with three wins.

 The Padres have won a season-high-tying seven straight games, and since August 17 are 20-5 (.800), the best record in the majors. San Diego is the only team in 2020 to have separate 7+ game win streaks and it's the first time the Padres have done this since the last time they made it to the World Series in 1998. The last time San Diego won 8+ consecutive games was August 19-27, 2012 (8 straight).

 Corey Seager leads the Dodgers in batting average (.317) and slugging percentage (.616) among batting-title qualifiers. Only one Dodger shortstop has ever led the club in these two categories over an entire season, and that was Seager back in 2016 (.308 BA, .512 SLG).

 Wil Myers hit his 12th home run of the season in the nightcap versus San Francisco last night. The Padres are the only team in baseball with three different players with 12+ home runs (Fernando Tatis Jr. -- 15 & Manny Machado -- 13).

 Clayton Kershaw's 21 career wins are t-8th most all-time against the Padres, and six of the seven pitchers with more wins are in the Hall-of-Fame. Kershaw has not lost to San Diego since June 21, 2013. His 13 consecutive winning decisions against San Diego are tied for the most consecutive for any Dodger pitcher against a single opponent since 1901 (Koufax vs. NYM, Drysdale vs. Phi and Fitzsimmons vs. Pit).

SAN DIEGO (AP)  While the Los Angeles Dodgers are regular participants in postseason baseball, there was something unusual about becoming the first team in the pandemic-shortened season to clinch a berth in the expanded playoffs.
''It's different, I guess. I just found that out five minutes ago,'' manager Dave Roberts said in his video news conference after the Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 7-5 to take two of three in a matchup of the NL's two top teams.
