 St. Louis has won five of seven meetings between these teams in 2020, doubling up the Reds' run total (42-21). The Cardinals won the season series with Cincinnati each of the past eight years (2012-19).

 The Cardinals split a doubleheader with Detroit yesterday, winning 12-2 in the first game before a 6-3 loss in the second. They are the only MLB team this year that is unbeaten when scoring five or more runs (16-0); they are 3-18 (.143) when scoring four or fewer runs, fifth worst in the majors.

 Cincinnati ranks last in the NL in runs per game (3.84) and last in the majors with a .210 batting average. No MLB team has hit under .220 in a season since the 1972 Rangers (.217), and no NL team has done so since the 1963 Mets (.219).

 Luis Castillo picked up his first win of the season in last Friday's start in Pittsburgh, allowing two runs in 6.0 innings while striking out eight. He's averaging 12.5 strikeouts per nine innings this year (60/43.1), the highest rate in the modern era by a Reds pitcher through eight starts in a season.

 Yadier Molina is 11 hits away from 2000 in his career, a total only 11 catchers all-time have reached (including seven Hall of Famers). Among active players at any position, Molina's 1989 hits rank fifth.

The Cincinnati Reds will seek a turning point in the National League playoff race Friday when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Reds (19-25) fell to the Chicago Cubs 8-5 in a game that dragged past midnight Thursday after a rain delay at the outset. The fourth-place Reds lost for the third time in four games and fell 6 1/2 games back of the Cubs the NL Central lead.

ST. LOUIS (AP)  Luis Castillo pitched a two-hitter for his first complete game in the majors, Joey Votto homered and the Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 Friday night.
Castillo (2-5) struck out six and walked three in winning his second straight start. An All-Star last year, the right-hander made his 87th career start in the big leagues.
