The A's are still in first place in the AL west and the Astros are still comfortably in second place 3.5 games behind, but Oakland has lost four of its last five games, and Houston was swept in a four-game series in Anaheim over the weekend.

The home team has won all five meetings between these teams this season, and the home team has won eight straight in this series dating back to last season. In 2020, Oakland swept a 3-game series from August 7-9 holding Houston to five runs total, and Houston swept a doubleheader in Texas on August 29.

The A's have only played five games in the last 11 days. Their games on August 27 and August 28 in Texas and Houston, respectively, were both postponed in protest of racial inequality, then they were swept in a doubleheader at Houston on August 29, before having a positive Covid-19 test. Sunday August 30th was postponed, August 31 was a scheduled off day and the three-game series in Seattle from Tuesday-Thursday was postponed. Oakland returned to play on Friday, but lost 2-of-3 at home against the Padres.

One bright spot from the weekend set against San Diego was Matt Olson, who went 5-for-9 in the series and strung together back-to-back multi-hit games for the first time this season and also had multiple RBI in back-to-back games for the first time this year.

Houston was swept in Anaheim over the weekend despite putting up five-plus runs in all four games. All four losses occurred in Los Angeles' last at bat of the game. It was just the second time in team history that the Astros were swept in a four-game series despite scoring 5+ runs in each game. Unsurprisingly, the first time occurred in Colorado from May 28-31, 2012.

Despite the sweep, Kyle Tucker had seven hits and seven RBI in the series against the Angels. Since August 19, 17 games, Tucker leads the American League with a .414 batting average, .485 on-base percentage, a .948 slugging percentage (all based on min. 50 PA), five triples and 14 extra-base hits. Tucker also leads all of MLB in RBI (26) since August 19.

Oakland (24-14) opened up a 4 1/2-game lead over Houston (21-20) atop the division with a 6-0 win Monday night in the opener of a four-day, five-game series, handing the Astros a fifth consecutive defeat.

Bregman likely to return for Astros' twin bill at Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)  Dusty Baker waited for the Houston Astros to catch even a small break, and then his club finally got a few.
Yuli Gurriel hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the seventh inning set up by an Oakland error, and the Astros beat the Athletics 5-4 Tuesday to split a doubleheader and end a six-game losing streak.
