The Rays and Nationals open a two-game series, the first time playing one another since splitting their four meetings in 2018, with each team winning twice at home. Since its 1998 inaugural season, Tampa Bay is 14-3 (.824) against Washington when plating four of more runs - its best record vs. any team (min. eight such games) - and is 1-11 (.083) against the Nats when scoring three or fewer.

The Rays took two of three from the Marlins over the weekend, and have now won or tied their last 10 series. Tampa Bay, which also went 10 straight series without losing one in 2018, hasn't had a longer streak of consecutive series without a loss in a single season since 2013, when it won or tied 13 series in a row tying the franchise record from 2008.

The Rays are batting .186 this month -- second lowest in MLB, ahead of only the Reds at .183. The Nationals, meanwhile, have hit just three home runs this month -- tied with the Mariners for second fewest, ahead of only the A's with two.

Randy Arozarena homered twice Sunday, giving him three home runs through six games. He is the sixth Tampa batter to hit three home runs six games into this Rays career, and first since Lucas Duda in 2017.

The Nationals are averaging 8.21 runs in their wins, compared to 2.76 runs in their losses. That difference of 5.45 runs per game from wins to losses is the biggest in MLB. The biggest difference in runs per game from wins to losses in a completed season in the live-ball era is 5.25 by the 1936 Yankees.

Trea Turner leads MLB with 58 hits and is vying to become the first player in Washington franchise history to finish a season leading the majors in hits. Turner and Juan Soto, who is hoping to play in this series after missing the last three games with a sore elbow, have a combined .360/.432/.682 slash line with 20 homers this season, while the rest of the Nats are slashing .243/.308/.378 with 27 home runs.

Nats look to hand Rays rare series loss

WASHINGTON (AP)  Juan Soto drove in a run in his return to the lineup and the Washington Nationals used strong relief pitching to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 5-3 on Tuesday night to sweep the two-game series.
After missing five games with left elbow soreness, Juan Soto was back in the lineup as the designated hitter for just the second time this season. The 21-year old drove in a run in his first at-bat with a groundout to third in the first.
