The Cubs swept a three-game series from the Pirates from July 31-Aug. 2, with Chicago's starting pitchers limiting Pittsburgh to one run. It was just the second three-game series between these teams in the live-ball era that Cubs starters held the Pirates to a run, along with Aug. 16-18, 2019.

The Cubs are 5-7 when scoring three runs or fewer and that .417 winning percentage trails only the Rays' .500 winning percentage (4-4) for the best in MLB. The Pirates are 1-15 (.063) in such games.

Ian Happ has a major league-best 1.196 OPS with runners on base since the start of last season among players with at least 100 plate appearances in such situations. He has a .298/.388/.570 slash line against the Pirates, compared to a .245/.343/.481 against all other teams.

Yu Darvish, the scheduled starter for Thursday's finale, is the only Cubs pitcher in the live-ball era to go 6-0 with four or fewer runs allowed and at least 47 strikeouts over a six-start span in a single season. This stretch began July 31, when he struck out seven over six shutout innings in a 6-3 win over the Pirates.

Jon Lester takes the ball in the opener for the Cubs, and Pittsburgh slashed .276/.343/.449 against lefties in August for a .792 OPS. The Pirates had a .210/.267/.315 slash line for a .582 OPS against righties last month. Lester, however, is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA in his last three starts at PNC Park.

Josh Bell is just 1-for-20 with three walks in the first inning this season, and that .050 batting average is the worst among the 90 batters in the majors with at least 20 plate appearances in the first inning.

The Chicago Cubs seem to have found a new look at the top of the lineup that they might stick with in their road game Wednesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates and beyond.
Third baseman Kris Bryant, in his first game off the injured list Tuesday in the series opener, slid to second in the lineup for the first time this season rather than his customary leadoff spot. That No. 1 slot has been claimed, at least for now, by outfielder Ian Happ.

Cubs' revamped batting order takes aim at Pirates again

PITTSBURGH (AP)  Javier Baez hit a three-run home run and Kyle Hendricks pitched one-run ball over six innings Wednesday night to lead the Chicago Cubs to an 8-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Baez connected in the fourth inning to put Chicago in front 3-1. The blast carried 443 feet to the back set of bleachers in left-center field and came one pitch after Nick Tropeano relieved starter Joe Musgrove.
