 For this unexpected battle of last-place teams, both have a winning percentage in the .300s.  The Red Sox (.323) finished below .400 only once since 1931 (62--100, .383 in 1965).  The Nationals (.393) finished below .400 twice since the Expos moved to Washington D.C. (59--102, .366 in 2008, 59--103, .364 in 2009).

 Boston is one of four teams whose starting pitchers have been credited with only four wins this season (also the Tigers, Angeles, and Blue Jays).  Red Sox starters won only four of the team's first 31 games only once before (1932); it is worth noting Boston SPs were only 5--14 through 31 games last season.

 The Nationals, coming off three straight losses, have an 8--13 record during August and won consecutive games only once this month (against the Mets, Aug. 10--11).

 Mitch Moreland has played in only 20 of Boston's 31 games, but he leads the team with 21 RBIs. That is Moreland's highest RBI total over a span of 20 games since 2015 (21).

Trea Turner looks to continue his torrid stretch at the plate on Sunday afternoon when the visiting Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox play the rubber match of their three-game series.
Turner, who went 5-for-5 in Washington's 5-3 setback on Saturday, carries a career-high 14-game hitting streak and on-base run of 20 consecutive contests into the series finale. The 27-year-old is batting .474 (27-for-57) with three homers, 11 RBIs and 17 runs scored during his hitting streak.

Nationals' Turner looks to continue hot streak vs. Godley, Red Sox

BOSTON (AP)  Bobby Dalbec hit a two-run homer in his major league debut, Rafael Devers hit a pair of home runs, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Washington Nationals 9-5 on Sunday.
The 25-year-old Dalbec started hours after Boston traded first baseman Mitch Moreland to San Diego. Dalbec (2 for 4) struck out in his first at-bat before taking Javy Guerra deep over Pesky's Pole in right field in the third inning.
