 The Pirates won three games against the Brewers at PNC Park last weekend.  It was their first series sweep of Milwaukee since a five-game set at Pittsburgh in July 2018.  In the interim, the Brewers had won 22 of 31 games between the teams.

 Derek Shelton and the Pirates enter the series with a 9--19 record.  Only three current MLB managers lost at least 20 of their first 30 games in the majors, but two of them became World Series winners: Terry Francona (10--20) and Joe Girardi (8--22). The other is Brandon Hyde (10--20).

 The Brewers had only eight hits in a pair of seven-inning losses to the Reds yesterday. It was Milwaukee's lowest hit total in a doubleheader since May 4, 2011 (7 hits at Atlanta). The team's record low of five hits in a twinbill was set in 1972 against the Orioles (vs. McNally and Alexander) and tied in 1977 at KC.

 Colin Moran was the major leagues' early home-run leader with five through August 1. Moran, however, has hit only one homer in 15 games since then (53 AB).

 Christian Yelich has swung at the first pitch on only 13% of his plate appearances this season, compared to a career high 30% in 2019.

 Derek Holland leveled his career record at 79--79 with a victory over the Brewers last Saturday.  At one time Holland's record stood 16 games above the .500 mark (57--41 through games of April 19, 2016).

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Milwaukee Brewers are set to play baseball Friday at Miller Park, but that doesn't mean they are overlooking the civil unrest and Black Lives Matter protests that have spread across the country.
The latest incident to raise voices about social injustice occurred when Wisconsin man Jacob Blake, who is Black, was shot in the back by police in Kenosha last Sunday and reportedly left paralyzed from the waist down. Several sports teams and leagues have postponed games this week.

Burnes, Holland get nods in Pirates-Brewers opener

MILWAUKEE (AP)  Jedd Gyorko homered twice and Corbin Burnes struck out 10 in six innings, helping the Milwaukee Brewers pound the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-1 on Friday night.
Burnes (1-0) gave up three hits and walked one as the Brewers bounced back after dropping six of their previous eight games. They were swept in a three-game series at Pittsburgh last weekend.
