 The Astros and Padres meet for just their third series since the Astros joined the American League in 2013, with Houston taking five of the six meetings in that span. That includes a three-game sweep in the last matchup in San Diego back in April 2015, where the Astros outscored the Padres 30-9.

 Houston is hitting .374 with runners on base over its eight-game winning streak after hitting just .198 with runners on during the prior 1-6 stretch. This is the Astros' fourth win streak of at least eight games since the start of last season -- the team had just three such streaks over the previous 10 seasons.

 The Padres hit a grand slam in all four games of their home-and-home set against the Rangers, becoming the first team in major league history to hit a grand slam in four straight games. They now have five grand slams this season -- the rest of the National League has combined for four.

 Kyle Tucker went 6-for-9 with three triples and a home run in the two-game set in Colorado, giving him the major league lead with four triples this season. Four of his five career triples have come in Colorado (also hit a pinch-hit triple on July 24, 2018), while the other came in Houston against the Giants on August 11 this season.

 Fernando Tatis Jr. leads the majors with 12 home runs, including an MLB-high 10 home runs this month. Tatis is on pace for 26 home runs over the 60-game season, which would be the most by a Padre through 60 team games -- Adrian Gonzalez holds the current distinction with 22 bombs in the first 60 games of 2009.

 Garrett Richards will make his 13th career start against the Astros, which would tie Johnny Cueto and Taijuan Walker for seventh most among active pitchers. He has gone 5-5 in his career against Houston, posting a 2.99 ERA and a .226 opponent average, but is seeking his first victory over Houston since May 10, 2015.

Astros, Padres enter series winning despite ailing

SAN DIEGO (AP)  There were no flashy grand slams for the San Diego Padres, just a gritty, grind-em-out effort from the bullpen after Garrett Richards lasted only two innings.
Javy Guerra took over after Richards departed and Manny Machado hit a pair of RBI singles for the Padres, who beat Houston 4-3 Friday night to snap the Astros' eight-game win streak.
