 The Mets have won six of their last seven home games against Washington, with five of those wins coming by two or fewer runs. The teams split a two-game series last week at Nationals Park.

 New York is batting an MLB-best .284 this season with less than two outs, compared to a .184 average with two outs -- 28th in MLB. The Mets' .143 average with two outs and runners in scoring position is the second worst in the majors (Phillies, .083).

 Washington is 0-7 this season when scoring three or fewer runs, compared to 4-0 when scoring four or more. Going back to last season -- and including the playoffs -- the Nats have won 29 of their last 30 games when plating at least four runs.

 Over his last 10 games against the Mets, Juan Soto is batting .459 (17/37) with five homers, 11 RBI and a 1.589 OPS. The Nationals have won just two of those 10 games, however.

 Patrick Corbin has struck out eight batters in each of his first two starts of 2020, including last week's win over the Mets. Since 2005, the only Nationals to strike out eight or more in each of their first three outings of the season were Stephen Strasburg in 2010 (four straight) and Max Scherzer in 2015 (three).

 Pete Alonso is hitting .197 with two homers, six RBI and a .649 OPS. At the same juncture in his 2019 Rookie of the Year campaign (through 16 games), Alonso was hitting .339 with six home runs, 17 RBI and a 1.181 OPS.

It hasn't been the start that Pete Alonso or the New York Mets would have preferred.
But if Wednesday night's 11-6 win over the Washington Nationals at Citi Field is any indication, last year's National League Rookie of the Year might be locked in and ready to carry New York into playoff contention.

Alonso, Mets go for split with Nationals

NEW YORK (AP)  Tomas Nido had his first two-homer game as a professional, hitting a two-run shot in the fourth inning and a grand slam in the fifth to lead the New York Mets to an 8-2 win over the Washington Nationals and a split of the four-game series.
Nido, who entered Thursday with five homers and 26 RBIs over 93 games in parts of four big league seasons, is just the fifth catcher in Mets history to hit at least two homers and collect at least six RBIs in a game. Hall of Famers Gary Carter and Mike Piazza did it twice apiece and Todd Hundley and Paul Lo Duca once each.
