 The Yankees went 12-7 against Tampa Bay last year, the fifth straight season they won the season series between the clubs. The Yanks lost their last four games at Tropicana Field, however, scoring a total of five runs in those losses (1.25 per game).

 New York has at least one home run in all 12 games this year, the longest such streak to open a season in franchise history. Their 24 home runs lead the majors and are tied for the most through 12 games in team annals (also 24 last year).

 After opening the season 4-1, the Rays have dropped six of their last seven games. They averaged 6.6 runs through their first five contests, compared to 2.6 per game since.

 Gary Sanchez hit his first home run of the season in yesterday's 5-4 loss to the Phillies, though his batting average still sits at .097 (3-for-31). Sanchez has four homers, seven RBI and 11 strikeouts in his career against Friday Rays starter Blake Snell -- all the most by any batter versus Snell.

 In his last eight starts against the Rays going back to July 2017, Masahiro Tanaka is 4-2 with a 1.79 ERA (11/55.1), striking out 61 while walking just five. His career record versus Tampa Bay stands at 10-4 in 18 starts.

The Tampa Bay Rays turned to their strength Friday night in the series opener against the New York Yankees -- shutdown pitching.
Tampa Bay's staff, using six hurlers, hunkered down and two-hit the Yankees in a 1-0 win, becoming the first team to shut out the slugging Bronx Bombers this year. In fact, they became the first team to hold the Yankees hitless in a game.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP)  Austin Meadows hit a two-run single, and the Tampa Bay Rays held off the New York Yankees 5-3 for a split of seven-inning games in a doubleheader Saturday.
The Yankees won the opener 8-4 as ace Gerrit Cole came within one strike of earning his 20th straight regular-season win.
