 The Cardinals took two of three games against the Pirates to open the season in which their relief corps allowed just two earned runs in 9.2 innings (1.86 ERA). Last season, St. Louis' bullpen posted a 3.82 ERA, second best in the National League behind the Dodgers (3.78).

 Minnesota combined for 44 runs with the Chicago White Sox (27-17) in its opening series, its most through three games of the season since 1996, when the Twins and the Tigers combined for 53 runs.

 The all-time series between the Cardinals and Twins stands at 13-13, but Minnesota has won five of the last six games. In those six games, the Twins posted a 1.83 ERA and held the Cardinals to a .182 average.

 Paul Goldschmidt went 5-for-12 with a home run in the opening series against Pittsburgh. Goldschmidt, whose .260 average and .821 OPS in 2019 were career lows among eight full seasons, has slashed .349/.391/.651 in his last 10 games dating back to last season.

 Nelson Cruz had 10 RBI against the White Sox, seven of which came in the series finale. At 40 years old, he's the oldest player with a seven-RBI game since Jason Giambi on May 19, 2011. He is also the first player with at least 10 RBI in his team's first three games since Chris Davis in 2013 (11 RBI).

 Homer Bailey has a career 5.80 ERA in 28 starts against the Cardinals, the highest by any pitcher (minimum 25 starts) since earned runs became official in the National League in 1912. He lasted 1.2 innings while allowing two home runs and five earned runs in his last start against the Cardinals.

Forty-year-old left-hander Rich Hill will make his Minnesota debut on Wednesday night as the Twins try to complete a two-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in Minneapolis.
Hill signed a one-year free agent contract with Minnesota on New Year's Eve after going 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 13 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season. He underwent left elbow surgery in October. Hill originally was penciled in to start Saturday afternoon against the White Sox in Chicago but had his debut pushed back to Wednesday due to what was termed minor soreness.

Hill set for Twins debut against Cardinals

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)  Josh Donaldson homered and drove in two runs in his Target Field debut with Minnesota, Jorge Polanco hit a two-run shot and the Twins beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 in their home opener on Tuesday night.
Homer Bailey (1-0) pitched five innings in his first start for the Twins, allowing a two-run homer to Tyler O'Neill in the fifth. Bailey had a 6-0 lead before that thanks in part to Donaldson, the heralded addition to an already potent lineup who signed a four-year, $92 million contract during the winter.
