 The Cubs opened the season taking 2-of-3 at home against the Brewers, giving rookie skipper David Ross his first series win as a major-league manager. Chicago allowed eight runs in its lone loss, but just one run combined in the book-end victories over Milwaukee.

 The Reds dropped 2-of-3 against Detroit at home to start their season, but the starting pitching can't be blamed. The trio of Sonny Gray (6.0 IP, 1 R, 9 K), Luis Castillo (6.0 IP, 1 R, 11 K) and Trevor Bauer (6.1 IP, 1 R, 13 K) combined for a 1.47 ERA and 33 K against just four bases on balls.

 The Reds won the 2019 season series over the Cubs, 11-8. It was the first Cincinnati series win over Chicago since 2014 (11-8). The teams combined for 60 HR in 2019 (31 by the Cubs; 29 by the Reds).

 Anthony Rizzo was hit by pitch six times in 13 games against Cincinnati in 2019, and has been plunked by Reds' pitching 20 times in his career, tied for most by any active player versus any opponent (Rizzo 20 HBP vs. Pit). Rizzo's 27 home runs against Cincinnati since 2014 are the most by any player.

 Eugenio Suarez went 0-for-11 versus Detroit over the weekend, but he had a career-high 49 home runs last season, and nine of the 49 came against Cubs' pitching. Suarez hit at least one home run in all six series against the Cubs in 2019.

 Jon Lester has started 19 times against Cincinnati (all since 2015, all with Chicago) and the Cubs are 15-4 in those 19 games. Lester has never allowed more than one home run in a game against the Reds.

CINCINNATI (AP)  Manager David Ross was starting to relax with a seven-run lead. Didn't take long for him to remember from his playing days that Great American Ball Park can erase most anything.
Anthony Rizzo homered for the third time as Chicago built a seven-run lead, and the Cubs let most of it slip away before Jeremy Jeffress closed out an 8-7 victory over a Cincinnati Reds team coping with coronavirus uncertainty.
