 The Blue Jays have won five straight games against the Nationals, sweeping the most recent series in Toronto in 2018. Of the 21 players who played in that series for Toronto, only Teoscar Hernandez, Randall Grichuk and Sam Gaviglio are still with the Jays. For Washington, seven of the 21 players from that series remain with the club.

 Toronto lost two of three games against the Rays, despite outhitting the Rays in every game and outhitting them by 12 hits over the entire series. The Blue Jays were the only MLB team to outhit their opponent in every game of their opening series.

 Washington dropped two of three games against the Yankees, blowing a 2-0 lead in the seventh inning of the rubber match. Since the beginning of last season, 52.1 percent (37/71) of the Nationals' losses have come via blown leads, the fourth-highest percentage in MLB.

 Trent Thornton had a 2.19 ERA in September 2019 and allowed just one home run in 24.2 innings pitched (0.36 HR/9). Among the 112 pitchers who pitched 20.0 innings in September, only three (Kyle Hendricks, Spencer Turnbull and James Paxton) had a lower HR/9 mark for the month than Thornton.

 Anibal Sanchez had a 1.85 ERA in four regular-season interleague starts last season. That is the lowest ERA in games against the opposite league in a single season of his career.

 Cavan Biggio has reached base safely (hit, walk or hit by pitch) in 32 consecutive games. That is the longest active streak in MLB and the longest by a Blue Jay since Jose Bautista had a 33-game streak in August and September of 2016.

Blue Jays' road tour heads to Washington

WASHINGTON (AP)  Because of injuries, the can't-play-in-Toronto Blue Jays were without their leadoff hitter and their closer against the Washington Nationals on Monday night.
The two guys who took over those jobs came through. Teoscar Hernandez replaced late scratch Bo Bichette and hit two of Toronto's four solo homers off Anibal Sanchez, Anthony Bass got the save while filling in for Ken Giles, and the Blue Jays beat the 2019 World Series champions 4-1.
