 The Astros took 18 of the 19 meetings with the Mariners last season, including each of the last 13 meetings -- and all 10 matchups in Houston. The Indians also went 18-1 over the Tigers last season -- prior to that, no team had won 18+ games against a single opponent since 1961 (Reds, 19-3 vs. Phillies).

 Houston enters the season having won 100+ games in each of the last three seasons, one of six teams in MLB history to accomplish the feat. No team has ever won 100+ games in four straight seasons, a record that will remain intact due to the shortened schedule.

 After going 89-73 (.549) in 2018, the Mariners finished at 68-94 (.420) in 2019 -- the second-largest decrease in win percentage over the last two seasons (Red Sox, .667 &#61664; .519). Seattle is seeking its first playoff berth since 2001 -- the club's 18-season drought is the longest active streak in the four major US leagues.

 Marco Gonzales has gone 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA in seven appearances (six starts) against the Astros, his worst ERA against any team he's faced multiple times. Astros hitters are slashing .346/.411/.520 against him in those seven games, but have only hit three home runs.

 Justin Verlander is slated to make his 12th career Opening Day start, which would rank fourth in American League history behind Jack Morris (14), Walter Johnson (14) and Roger Clemens (13). At 37 years, 155 days old, Verlander will be the oldest Astros Opening Day starter since Nolan Ryan opened the 1986 season at 39 years, 67 days.

 The Mariners have gone 26-17 (.605) all-time on Opening Day, the second best record among current franchises (Mets, .655). Meanwhile, the Astros have won seven straight season openers and look to be the first team to win eight straight since the Orioles did so from 2011-18. The Mariners won nine straight season openers from 2007-15.

With the coronavirus pandemic delaying the start of the season until late July, the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners opened a four-game weekend series and 60-game regular season in an empty stadium with artificial crowd noise utilized to offset the unnerving silence. But once the Astros got going and rolled to an 8-2 victory, everything that was missing became moot.

Astros' McCullers set to return after almost 2 years away

HOUSTON (AP)  Lance McCullers Jr. was solid in his return from Tommy John surgery, Yuli Gurriel and George Springer homered and the Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners for the 15th straight time, 7-2 on Saturday.
McCullers (1-0) yielded five hits and two runs over six innings in his first game since the 2018 playoffs. He got double plays from his defense to escape jams in the first two innings before settling in to get the win, striking out six.
