 The Red Sox have won nine of the last 11 meetings with the Orioles and are 27-8 in the series -- including 13-4 at home -- since the start of 2018. Boston batted .350 with 22 extra-base hits in a three-game sweep of the Orioles at Fenway Park from August 16-18.

 Baltimore dropped two of three at Toronto with Wednesday's 3-2 loss, its 107th of the season which matches the 1988 team for the franchise's second-worst record since it relocated in 1954. The Orioles already have five more wins than last season's team that finished 47-115.

 Boston lost 7-5 at Texas on Thursday to cap a 3-3 trip. With a 37-41 home record, the Red Sox will finish below .500 at home (0-2 in London) for the first time since a 34-47 mark in 2014. This will be the second time in team history that the Red Sox will have an overall winning record and a losing home record (1980).

 Trey Mancini is batting .376 (35-for-93) with five homers and 20 RBI in September. His 35 hits this month rank third in the majors and his 20 RBI are tied for sixth. Mancini has hit .381 (24-for-63) this season against the Red Sox, the highest of any player in MLB (minimum 50 PA).

 With a current .305 average, J.D. Martinez could become the 20th player in history to hit .300 with 35 homers and 100 RBI in as many as three straight seasons. The most recent to do it was Albert Pujols from 2008-2010. Babe Ruth holds the all-time record with seven consecutive seasons (1926-1932).

 Jonathan Villar has 23 multi-hit games since July 25 to tie for fourth-most in the majors. With one stolen base in this series, Villar would become the sixth Oriole (since 1954) with 40 in a season and the first since Brian Roberts had 40 in 2008. Villar ranks second in MLB with 159 steals since 2016 (Billy Hamilton, 172).

"If you don't reset (the competitive balance tax), there are penalties," John Henry said, confirming the team would cut payroll. "So, we've known for some time now we needed to reset as other clubs have done."

BOSTON (AP)  The Baltimore Orioles are finding reason to celebrate late in a season that's included little to cheer.
Renato Nunez homered in his second straight game, John Means pitched five solid innings despite a rocky start and the Orioles outslugged Boston in a 9-4 win over the Red Sox on Saturday.
