 The Cardinals took two of three from the Diamondbacks in St. Louis coming out of the All-Star break and are 12-5 in Arizona since 2014. The Cards are 4-0-1 in their last five series at Phoenix, the franchise's longest stretch without losing a series in Arizona.

 St. Louis is coming off a four-game sweep at Wrigley Field, its first there since May 1921. The Cardinals won each game by one run, the first time they won all four games of a series by a single run since September 9-11, 1945 against the New York Giants.

 Paul Goldschmidt will play his first games in Arizona as a visitor. The Diamondbacks franchise's all-time leader in walks, Goldschmidt leads the majors with 20 base on balls in 21 games this month after drawing just 16 walks in 52 games in July and August combined.

 Adam Wainwright has won all four of his September starts behind a 0.33 ERA -- the lowest by any pitcher this month with a minimum of 20 innings. He tossed seven shutout innings against the Diamondbacks back in July, and is 3-0 with a 0.45 ERA in three starts against NL West teams this season.

 The Diamondbacks have the majors' third-worst OPS this month at .664 after entering September with a .773 OPS. Nick Ahmed has a .682 OPS with five RBI in 18 September games after posting a .897 OPS with 23 RBI in August.

 Eduardo Escobar, Arizona's leader with 35 home runs, hit his 29th double of the season Saturday. He is now a double away from joining Mark Reynolds in 2009 and Matt Williams in 1999 as the only Arizona third basemen with at least 35 homers and 30 doubles in a season.

PHOENIX (AP)  Arizona had ample reasons to be a beaten-down ballclub one day after being officially eliminated from the National League playoff race.
Instead, the Diamondbacks powered through 19 innings of baseball, used 13 pitchers and earned an unlikely 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in a game that lasted nearly seven hours.
