 These teams haven't met since 2016, when the Red Sox won two of three at Petco Park. Boston is 0-3-1 in interleague series in 2019 after going 10-0-3 the previous 13 series (excluding World Series). San Diego is 10-7 against the AL in 2019 with a chance at its first winning season in interleague play since going 8-7 in 2012.

 The Padres return home after completing a 3-3 road trip with Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Cincinnati. After heading into the All-Star break at 45-45, San Diego's .389 winning percentage (14-22) in the second half is the fourth-worst in the NL. They're on pace for the franchise's ninth straight losing season.

 Rafael Devers currently leads the majors in hits (168), total bases (302), doubles (47) and extra-base hits (77). He could become the first player to lead in each of those categories since Don Mattingly in 1986. The only other player to accomplish that since 1950 was Robin Yount in 1982.

 Eduardo Rodriguez, Friday's scheduled starter, is 8-1 with a 3.31 ERA in his last 13 starts. Since June 14, he's tied for the second-most wins in the majors (Gerrit Cole - 10). Rodriguez is 5-0 with a 2.80 ERA in his last 10 interleague starts, the fourth-longest stretch without a loss among active pitchers.

 Hunter Renfroe ranked sixth in the NL in slugging (.613) in the first half (min. 250 PA) but has slumped to a .330 mark in the second half that ranks 91st (min. 100 PA). His .183 average since the All-Star break is 97th in the NL and his 45 strikeouts are tied for the fifth-most in the NL (min. 100 PA).

 Francisco Mejia ranks fourth in the majors with a .404 average (19-for-47) since August 4th (min. 45 PA). He is slashing .333/.379/.573 in the second half with six home runs and 13 RBI and his .952 OPS during that span is second in MLB among catchers (min. 75 PA, based on player's career primary position).

The biggest news coming from the Boston Red Sox on Friday was not about who is starting Saturday against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.
That will be right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (1-0, 6.69 ERA) who will go against Padres right-hander Dinelson Lamet (2-2, 3.95 ERA) in the middle game of a three-game interleague series.

SAN DIEGO (AP)  Brock Holt liked the first pitch he saw from All-Star closer Kirby Yates so much that he hit it out of the ballpark.
Holt's homer on the first pitch of the ninth inning lifted the Boston Red Sox to a 5-4 victory against the San Diego Padres on Saturday night.
