Both teams enter this three-game interleague series on an upswing, with San Diego having won four of its last six games and Tampa Bay victorious in 12 of its last 15.

The Padres are 9-5 in interleague games this season, scoring 5.86 runs per game in interleague contests with an .863 OPS, a marked improvement on their 4.34 runs and .729 OPS against NL opponents.

The Rays' pitching staff has walked just 13 batters in August, fewest in the majors, and is second in the AL with a 2.74 ERA in this month after posting a 4.75 ERA in July. That improvement of 2.01 is the second-largest in the majors from July to August this season.

Ian Kinsler enters the series with 1,998 career hits, trailing only Robinson Cano among active second basemen. At 1,887 career games played, Kinsler is poised to get his 2,000th hit faster than Hall of Fame second basemen Joe Morgan (2,028 games) and Bill Mazeroski (2,117).

As the Rays were preparing to leave their hotel and head to the Padres then brand new downtown ballpark, a 5.2 earthquake hit the San Diego area. That didn't deter the Rays, however, they swept that series and have been dominating the Padres ever since -- although the teams have rarely played.

SAN DIEGO (AP)  The Tampa Bay Rays are 20 games over .500 for the first time since the 2013 season, and are feeling pretty good about themselves.
Avisail Garcia had a two-run home run among his three hits and Matt Duffy had four hits and three RBIs for the Rays, who benefited from a Padres bullpen meltdown in a 10-4 victory Monday night in their first game in San Diego since 2004.
