 The Rays closed a 3-2 homestand with Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Toronto and now play their next six away from Tropicana Field. Tampa Bay is 35-22 (.614) on the road and 31-28 at home. Only Minnesota (.625) has a better road winning percentage in MLB.

 The Mariners are 12-2 in their last 14 meetings with the Rays, including nine straight home wins for their longest home streak vs. any opponent since a nine-game run against the Red Sox from 2006-2007. Seattle's starting pitchers have posted a 1.51 ERA in the past five home matchups with Tampa Bay.

 The Mariners edged the Padres 3-2 on Wednesday to snap a five-game skid. In five games this month, Seattle is batting .134 with 10 runs. That's the team's lowest batting average in any five-game span since they hit .128 from April 24-29, 1986. Roger Clemens struck out 20 Mariners on April 29, 1986.

 Mallex Smith is tied for the major league lead with 31 steals, nine off his career high set last season with Tampa Bay. He's bidding to become the first Mariner to lead MLB in stolen bases since Ichiro Suzuki had 56 in 2001.

 Travis d'Arnaud has hit safely in a career high-tying nine straight games, going 13-for-36 (.361) and is tied for sixth in the AL with 24 RBI since the All-Star break. Since June 23, he leads all MLB catchers with 31 RBI and a 1.023 OPS (minimum 100 PA) and is tied for the lead with 10 home runs (Mitch Garver).

 Since going 0-4 with a 14.09 ERA during a four-start stretch at home, Marco Gonzales, Friday's scheduled starter, is 4-0 with a 2.20 ERA in his last four starts at T-Mobile Park. Gonzales is 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in two career starts against the Rays -- both coming last season.

Of the 10 trades between the Tampa Bay Rays and Seattle since Jerry Dipoto took over as the Mariners' general manager, there's one that he might want to have back.
On Jan. 11, 2017, Dipoto sent outfielder Mallex Smith, who was acquired 77 minutes earlier from Atlanta, and two minor-leaguers, shortstop Carlos Vargas and left-hander Ryan Yarbrough, to the Rays for lefty Drew Smyly.

Rays aim for sweep of host Mariners

SEATTLE (AP)  Mike Zunino's return to Seattle couldn't have gone much better.
Zunino started at catcher for the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, his first game in Seattle since being traded by the Mariners this offseason. He received cheers when he was announced before his first at-bat, and he hit a three-run homer to center in his second at-bat, the biggest blast in Tampa Bay's 5-4 win.
