 The Cubs are 5-7 against the Reds this season -- the only division opponent they have a losing record against. Chicago has lost four of the six meetings in Cincinnati, with its starting pitchers posting a 2.90 ERA and its bullpen compiling a 6.20 ERA.

 The Reds have won three in a row, scoring at least six runs in each. They're averaging 5.60 runs after the All-Star break after averaging 4.23 before it for an improvement of 1.37 - second-biggest in MLB (Astros, 1.39).

 In 12 games this season against the Cubs, Eugenio Suarez is batting .388 with five home runs and 16 RBI. No Cincinnati hitter has had more RBI in a single season against the Cubs since Tony Perez had 22 in just 10 games in 1975.

 Nicholas Castellanos doubled again Wednesday, giving him six in his first seven games with the Cubs -- the most by a Cub in his first seven games with the team since Dick Bartell also had six in 1939. Castellanos, however, has just one double and a .097 batting average in eight career games against the Reds, his lowest average against any team.

 The Cubs' Yu Darvish, Friday's scheduled starter, is 2-1 with a 2.17 ERA in five starts since the All-Star break, which includes throwing six-shutout innings against the Reds on July 17. Darvish had a 5.01 pre-All-Star break ERA, and that improvement of 2.84 is fifth-best in MLB among ERA qualifiers.

 Luis Castillo, slated to start Sunday's finale for the Reds, struck out a career-high 13 in Monday's win over the Angels. Among ERA qualifiers, Castillo is second in MLB with a .188 opponents' batting average (Astros' Justin Verlander, .168) and has the highest percent of swings that miss at 38.4. In the pitch-tracking era (since 1988), the pitcher with the highest percent of swings that missed in a single season was Pedro Martinez at 35.8 in 1999.

The Chicago Cubs, winners of five of their past six games to bolster their position atop the National League Central, will aim to continue their hot streak on Thursday as they begin a 10-game road trip with the opener of a four-game set against the Cincinnati Reds.
Ian Happ belted his second homer since making his season debut on July 26 by launching his second career grand slam in Chicago's 10-1 romp over the Oakland A's on Wednesday afternoon. The 24-year-old is batting .320 (8-for-25) with six RBIs in 12 games.

First-place Cubs open road trip at Cincinnati

CINCINNATI (AP)  Anthony Rizzo's 30th birthday celebration had a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy.
Rizzo had a pair of hits on his big day, Nicholas Castellanos added to his Chicago surge with a pair of homers and the Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 12-5 on Thursday night for their biggest NL Central lead of the season.
