 The Blue Jays took three of four from the Royals a month ago, hitting 12 home runs -- the franchise's most in a series since belting 13 in just three games against the Red Sox in September 2009. Toronto is scoring 52.1 percent of its runs this season via home runs, second only to Milwaukee's 53.3 percent.

 The Royals and Blue Jays have MLB's two worst records in one-run games, with Kansas City going 9-18 (.333) and Toronto at 10-17 (.370). The Royals haven't finished a season with a lower winning percentage in one-run games since 2001, when they went 11-24 (.314).

 Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is batting .412 with two homers, three doubles, 12 RBI and seven runs in his last nine games. On the season, he has a .452 OBP when leading off an inning -- fourth-best in MLB among the 253 batters with at least 50 such plate appearances.

 Whit Merrifield had two more hits Sunday to give him 136 on the season, second in MLB only to Boston's Rafael Devers (138). No Royal has entered August with more hits since Melky Cabrera had 137 in 2011.

 Alex Gordon has back-to-back two-hit games and his 12 multi-hit games in July are tied with Houston's Jose Altuve and Yuli Gurriel for the most in MLB. Kansas City is 12-20 this year when Gordon has two or more hits for a .375 winning percentage -- the worst team record from the 45 batters with at least 30 multi-hit games.

 Kansas City pitchers are allowing an AL-worst .295 batting average this month. The team hasn't allowed a batting average this high in a full calendar month since opponents hit .298 in September 2016.

With the recent promotion of hard-throwing right-handers Josh Staumont and Kyle Zimmer to the major league roster, the Kansas City Royals may become the latest team to embrace the "opener" concept.
Both Staumont and Zimmer hit the upper-90s with their fastball, though both have struggled with commanding the pitch. That's the right situation for an opener, even according to old-school manager Ned Yost.
