This will be the first matchup of the season between these teams. Since 2016, the Mariners are 10-1 against the Tigers in Seattle -- that .909 winning percentage is the third-highest by one team against another team from its own league at home in that span.

The Tigers are coming off being swept in a two-game series to the Phillies, the 11th time this season they've been swept -- the most in the majors. They've either lost or tied their last 15 series, the worst stretch by the club in a single season since the 119-loss 2003 team also went 15 straight winless series. The franchise's longest stretch for consecutive series without a win in a single season is 16 in 1996.

Nicholas Castellanos has four doubles in his last four games, increasing his major league-leading total to 36. Since 1969, only two Tigers have ever led the majors in doubles at the end of the season: Miguel Cabrera (48 in 2011) and Magglio Ordonez (54 in 2007).

The Mariners were third in the AL in scoring in June at 5.46 runs per game but are last in the league this month at 3.59. They've lost a franchise-record 39 consecutive games when scoring three runs or fewer, the longest such stretch by any team in a single season since the 2008 Braves lost 45 in row plating three or less.

Marco Gonzales, scheduled to start Saturday, won his 11th game of the season Monday, and has been responsible for 26.2 percent of Seattle's wins (11/42). Gonzales has a 7.51 run support average since June 7 -- third-highest among AL hurlers with at least 45 innings pitched.

Daniel Vogelbach hit a pair of homers in Wednesday's win over the Rangers, and his last four hits have all been home runs. The Mariners have won eight of the last nine games that Vogelbach has homered in, and are 17-5 this season when he goes deep.
