 The Pirates won the final three of a four-game series at St. Louis from May 9-12 after losing the opener 17-4. It was the Cardinals' most runs against Pittsburgh since a 19-4 victory on May 20, 2000.

 Paul Goldschmidt went 9-for-17 with a home run, four RBI and four runs in the May series against the Pirates. He has .323/.408/.556 slash line against NL Centrals teams this season while slashing .211/.298/.353 against all other opponents.

 The Cardinals have totaled just eight extra-base hits and eight walks in their last five games, only the third time in the last 15 years they've had eight or fewer extra-base hits and walks in a five-game span. Since June 25, their .298 OBP is the lowest in the NL while their 35 extra-base hits are tied with the White Sox for the fewest in MLB.

 The Pirates lead the majors with 112 hits in 10 games this month and have an MLB-high 561 singles this year. They haven't finished a season leading the majors in singles since 1972, when they had 1,097.

 Josh Bell hit his 31st double Saturday in his 90th game, and leads MLB with 61 extra-base hits. He is the first player with 61 extra-base hits through 90 games played since the Cubs' Derrek Lee had 62 in 2005.

 Chris Archer, Wednesday's scheduled starter, is averaging a career-high 17.5 pitches per inning, fifth highest in the NL among those with at least 80 innings. Ten of Archer's 16 starts this season have been five innings or less after having 11 such starts in 27 outings last year.

Pirates try to sneak closer to Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (AP)  Paul Goldschmidt was looking for a single. He ended up getting a whole lot more.
Goldschmidt hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off Michael Feliz in the seventh inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat Pittsburgh 6-5 on Wednesday, dealing the Pirates their fifth loss in six games.
