The Rangers took two out of three in both series against the Twins last season and have not lost a series at Target Field since July 2016. The Rangers won the teams' last meeting, 18-4, in Arlington last September, scoring at least one run against all seven Twins pitchers.

Texas won the series finale against the Angels, 9-3, to snap a four-game losing streak in which they scored 10 runs in total. The Rangers are 12-5 against AL Central opponents this season, second only to the Athletics (10-2) among AL teams.

Minnesota dropped two of three in both series on its six-game road trip, but three of the losses came by two runs or fewer. They return home where they've posted an AL-best 3.26 ERA and allowed just 38 home runs, fewest in MLB.

Adrian Sampson has posted a 5.16 ERA in his 12 starts compared to a 2.15 ERA in seven relief appearances this season. However, he's allowed just four runs in 13 innings in his last two starts after allowing nine runs in eight innings over his previous two starts.

Since leaving the Rangers after the 2013 season, Nelson Cruz is slashing .307/.392/.584 in 77 games against his former team. His 21 home runs against Texas in that span rank fourth in MLB, behind only Khris Davis (29), George Springer (24), and Mike Trout (24).

Former Ranger Martin Perez will get the start for the Twins in the series opener, his first against Texas. His .352 opponent slugging percentage ranks fifth in the AL this season after he posted a .527 mark last season; that 175-point decrease is the largest improvement among pitchers with at least 80 innings pitched in each season.

Left-hander Martin Perez will make the first start of his career against the team he spent his first seven major league seasons with when the Minnesota Twins open a three-game series with the Texas Rangers on Friday night in Minneapolis.
Perez (7-3, 4.15 ERA) signed as an undrafted free agent for $580,000 in 2007 with Texas. He compiled a 43-49 record with the Rangers, finishing sixth in the American League Rookie of the Year Award voting after compiling a 10-6 record and 3.62 ERA in 2013. He won a career-best 13 games in 2017.

Twins' Perez set to face ex-Rangers teammates

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)  Back home from their first losing road trip of the season, the Minnesota Twins put their record-setting power on display.
All-Star shortstop Jorge Polanco homered on his 26th birthday, Martin Perez held his former team scoreless until the seventh inning and Minnesota routed the Texas Rangers 15-6 on a drizzly Friday night at Target Field.
