 The Cubs have won nine of their last 10 meetings with the Mets and are 14-2 at home against New York in regular-season play since 2014. The Cubs have averaged 8.1 runs while slashing .332/.408/.547 over the last seven matchups between the teams at Wrigley Field.

 The Mets are an MLB-worst 8-24 on the road since April 13 after losing two of three in Atlanta to begin their current trip. It's just the second time since 1994 that they've won eight times or less over a 32-game span on the road within a season (8-24 from April 11-June 24, 2015).

 Willson Contreras homered twice in the Cubs' win over the White Sox on Wednesday, giving Chicago five players with 15 home runs or more before the All-Star break for the first time in franchise history. The Cubs are also the first team this season with five players to reach 15 homers.

 Jeff McNeil went 5-for-9 with a home run and three doubles over the final two games of the Atlanta series to raise his season average on the road to .356, tops among qualifying NL players. Since returning from the injured list on June 4, McNeil has recorded multiple hits in six of 12 starts.

 Mets relievers have a combined 8.20 ERA in June, the highest of any team this month. The bullpen has allowed at least one run in nine of the last 10 games.

 Cole Hamels enters Sunday's scheduled start with a 0.31 ERA through four starts in June. Hamels is bidding to become the first pitcher to allow one run or less while pitching at least seven innings in five straight starts since Clayton Kershaw did so from August 12-September 2, 2015.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish officially put an unpleasant chapter of his career in the rearview mirror in his previous start Saturday. On Friday afternoon, the visiting New York Mets hope Jason Vargas can begin doing the same thing for them.
The Mets will look to the oldest member of their rotation to provide some much-needed stability when the left-handed Vargas (3-3, 3.74 ERA) takes the mound against the right-handed Darvish (2-3, 4.65 ERA) and the Cubs in the second game of a four-game series.
