 The Nationals and Braves meet for the first time in 2019 after splitting 38 meetings in 2017 and '18, each team winning 19 times. Washington dominated the series in 2015 and 2016, going 29-9 against Atlanta. The Braves won 10 of 19 meetings in 2018, with each team recording 157 hits.

 After scoring 17 runs on 36 hits in winning the first three games of their weekend series against Miami, the Nats managed only two runs on five hits in dropping Monday's matinee, 3-2. The Nats are now 2-10 in games started by Max Scherzer this season and 20-22 when other starters get the nod.

 Atlanta took two of three games in St. Louis over the weekend, doing most of its scoring late in games. The Braves scored a total of two runs in innings one through five, but put up 10 runs in the sixth inning and later.

 Juan Soto is hitting .463 since May 17 with an MLB-high 19 hits (in 41 at-bats). Soto's six doubles in that stretch are the most among NL players and are tied for tops in MLB. In 13 games against the Braves (all last season), Soto has four homers, 10 RBI and a 1.082 OPS.

 Since the Nationals' franchise relocated to DC, Freddie Freeman is among the leaders in Nats opponents in hits (157, tied for seventh), home runs (18, tied for eighth) and RBI (82, tied for sixth). From 2014 through 2018, Freeman hit .353 in 80 games against Washington pitching.

 With a win on Tuesday, Max Fried (7-2) would become the first Brave since Tom Glavine in 2002 to win as many as eight games prior to June 1 in a season. Since World War II, only two Braves left-handers have won eight games by the end of May: Warren Spahn (1947 and '58) and Glavine (1991 and '02).

The Washington Nationals hope that veteran right-hander Stephen Strasburg can build on his last two starts when they begin a brief two-game visit to face the Eastern Division rival Atlanta Braves.
Strasburg (4-3, 3.25 ERA) will face Atlanta left-hander Max Fried (7-2, 2.88) on Tuesday in the first meeting between the teams this season.

Adam Eaton hopes overpowering performances by Stephen Strasburg and closer Sean Doolittle will start that turnaround.
