 The Dodgers swept a three-game set with the Pirates in late April, and since 2017 the Dodgers have gone 14-2 against the Pirates. Only one team has been better against any opponent in its own league over that span (A's vs. Tigers, 15-1).

 The Pirates notched season highs in runs (14) and hits (15) yesterday. This was the team's second time scoring at least 10 runs this season -- only three teams have fewer. The Pirates were also one of two teams failing to record 15+ hits in a game prior to yesterday, now leaving only the Indians.

 The Dodgers have gone 12-6 in May, tied with the Cubs for the best record in the NL, and LA's 2.65 team ERA in May leads MLB. The team has scored nine runs in its six losses (1.5 per game) and has scored 74 runs in 12 wins (6.2 per game).

 Josh Bell has 32 hits in May, tied with Jorge Polanco for most in MLB. He has 10 home runs, tied with Alex Bregman for most in MLB. He has 26 RBI in the month, five more than any other player in MLB. The Pirates are 7-0 when he scores multiple runs this season, and five of those games have come in May.

 Max Muncy hit a solo home run yesterday for the Dodgers' lone run, and he leads his team with 14 runs scored this month. In his career against Pittsburgh, Muncy has a .412/.500/.676 slash line with 11 runs scored in nine games.

 Cody Bellinger's batting average dropped below .400 after an 0-for-4 day yesterday -- this was his first game of 2019 going 0-for-4 or worse. The Dodgers are 3-5 when Bellinger goes hitless this season. He already has more strikeouts in May (14) than he had in all of April (13).

Perhaps the good news for the Pittsburgh Pirates heading into a weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at PNC Park is that they now won't have to face Clayton Kershaw.
Kershaw initially was scheduled to start Sunday, but he has been pushed back a day because Kenta Maeda (left adductor contusion) is expected to come off the injured list to start that game.

Pirates prepare for Buehler, Dodgers

PITTSBURGH (AP)  David Freese stepped into the batter's box, heard the polite applause from the crowd at a ballpark he once called home and was surprised when the familiar strains of Tool's ''Stinkfist'' blasted through the speakers at PNC Park.
The Pittsburgh Pirates played the song as a token of respect for the veteran infielder, who spent two-plus seasons in black-and-gold before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers last summer. Freese took in the moment and relaxed. But only briefly. The cheers that greeted him Friday night were quickly replaced by a groan after he turned on a Michael Feliz fastball for a first-inning grand slam that powered the Dodgers to a lopsided 10-2 win.
