 Despite having a 7-3 record in May, the Pirates have a -16-run differential over that time. It's just the fifth time in NL history that a team has won seven of 10 games while having a run differential of -15 or worse, and first time since the Diamondbacks from July 27 -- August 7, 2007.

 The Diamondbacks won the first game of their four-game series at home against the Braves, then proceeded to lose the final three games. Arizona's 8-10 record at home is tied for 22nd in the majors, while its 14-9 mark on the road ranks fourth.

 The Diamondbacks have won eight straight games against the Pirates, their longest active win streak against any opponent. Over these eight games, Arizona has outscored Pittsburgh by 38 runs (51-13), while hitting 10 home runs to Pittsburgh's two.

 In his last start, Robbie Ray struck out 11 batters in 5.2 innings pitched. Ray has five career starts with double-digit strikeouts when pitching fewer than 6.0 innings, tied with Nolan Ryan and Rich Harden for the most such games by any pitcher in the live-ball era (since 1920).

 Through 37 games this season, Josh Bell has 25 extra-base hits, 25 runs and 34 RBI. The last Pirate with at least 25 extra-base hits, 25 runs, and 25 RBI through 37 games in a season was Dale Long in 1956.

 Ketel Marte hit two home runs and drove in six runs when the Diamondbacks swept the Pirates in four games earlier this season. Since that series began on April 22, Marte is slashing .295/.395/.580 with five home runs and 15 runs scored in 19 games.

Pittsburgh first baseman Josh Bell takes the majors leagues' longest hitting streak into the Pirates' Wednesday afternoon series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Phoenix.
The Pirates cleanup hitter is smashing the ball, with six home runs, seven doubles and 21 RBIs during his 14-game run. Bell hit two homers in Pittsburgh's 6-2 victory Tuesday night, the first traveling an estimated 446 feet to center field and the second going 460 feet to right.

Pirates' Bell streaks into series finale vs. D-backs

PHOENIX (AP)  Zack Greinke was cruising along when he felt something wrong. Taking no chances, the Arizona Diamondbacks ace called it a day.
Greinke pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning before exiting with abdominal tightness and the Diamondbacks routed Chris Archer and the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-1.
