 The Red Sox won four of six games against the Tigers last season. Boston held Detroit to two total runs in its four wins while Detroit held Boston to two runs in the Sox' two losses. Three of the six games were shutouts, two by Boston and one by Detroit.

 The Tigers took two of three games from the White Sox in Detroit over the weekend. Shane Greene recorded a save in each win and he has now saved each of the Tigers' ten wins this season. Since saves became an official stat in 1969, no team has recorded a save its first 11 wins of a season.

 The Red Sox swept a three-game series with the Rays in Tampa over the weekend. Boston scored its winning runs in the 8th, 9th and 11th innings of the three games, listed in order by date. Eight of the Red Sox' nine wins this season have seen them score the winning runs in the seventh inning or later.

 Nicholas Castellanos led the Tigers with 23 home runs last season. He was the fifth different player to lead Detroit in home runs over the last five seasons. Three of those five are no longer on the team and the other two, Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera have yet to homer in 162 total plate appearances in 2019.

 Mookie Betts went 6-for-12 in the series with the Rays. He came into the series with six hits in his previous 11 games. Betts has just eight extra-base hits (four doubles and four HR) through 22 games this season. He had 16 extra-base hits (eight doubles and eight HR) in as many games to start last season.

 Matthew Boyd had his third straight quality start against the Pirates on April 16, a 7.0-inning outing with three earned runs and seven strikeouts. With his 36 strikeouts through four starts, Boyd has equaled Max Scherzer in 2013 and Hal Newhouser in 1943 for the most to start a season in Tigers' history.

BOSTON (AP)  Chris Sale remained winless and frustrated, but at least he saw a slight improvement. That was about the closest thing to good news for the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
Sale struck out 10, but it wasn't enough as Detroit beat Boston 7-4 to start the Tigers' first doubleheader sweep at Fenway Park since August 1965. Spencer Turnbull (1-2) pitched five shutout innings for his first major league win, leading the Tigers to a 4-2 victory in the nightcap that left the Red Sox at 9-15.
