The Rays won the season series against the Blue Jays last year, 13-6, holding the Jays to just 3.11 runs per game. Tommy Pham slashed .452/.558/.806 against Toronto as a Ray, recording at least one hit in eight of the nine games.

Tampa Bay swept the Chicago White Sox in its last series, holding the Sox to just one run in two of the three games. The Rays have held opponents to two runs or fewer in 10 of their first 13 games, becoming the fourth AL team to ever do so and first since the Athletics in 1981.

The Blue Jays split a two-game set with the Red Sox in their last series and sit at 4-9 on the season with a 2.88 ERA as a team. They are the eighth team in the live-ball era (since 1920) to start a season 4-9 or worse with an ERA under 3.00 and the first to do so since the 1986 Dodgers (4-9, 2.48 ERA).

Austin Meadows went 7-for-10 with two home runs and eight RBI in Tampa Bay's sweep of the White Sox. Meadows is hitting .625 with runners in scoring position this season, tied with Pittsburgh's Josh Bell for best in MLB (minimum 10 PA).

Freddy Galvis went 4-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored in last night's loss to Boston. It was his third four-hit game dating back to September 18, 2018, most in MLB. His 37 total hits since then also lead baseball.

Trent Thornton will make the third start of his career on Friday after allowing just two runs and five total hits with 15 strikeouts in his first two starts. He is the sixth pitcher in the live-ball era to record at least 15 strikeouts while allowing five hits or fewer through two major-league starts.

Clay Buchholz did not find an easy spot for his Toronto Blue Jays debut on Saturday.
The right-hander will oppose the visiting Tampa Bay Rays and 2018 American League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell (2-1, 2.84 ERA) in the second game of a three-game series.

TORONTO (AP)  Luke Maile knows how tough Blake Snell can be, having caught him many times during two seasons with Tampa Bay.
Maile, now Toronto's backup catcher, broke up Snell's no-hit bid in the sixth inning, and the Blue Jays went on to beat the Rays 3-1 Saturday, snapping Tampa Bay's five-game winning streak.
