Houston won the season series with Oakland last season, 12-7. However, the series was even in the 10 games played at Minute Maid Park, with the Astros scoring 5.2 runs per game compared to 7.0 runs per game in the nine games played in Oakland.

The Athletics won their last series with the Red Sox, 3-1, as they held the defending champions to just nine runs in the four-game set. The A's have allowed a total of 18 runs in their first two home series after allowing 14 runs in their two-game opening series with the Mariners in Japan.

Home plate umpire Ron Kulpa provided the Astros cover for their lingering frustration on Wednesday at Globe Life Park, ejecting Houston manager A.J. Hinch and hitting coach Alex Cintron in the second inning before engaging in a tense conversation with Astros right-hander Gerrit Cole during a 4-0 loss at Texas.
Truthfully, Kulpa served as a scapegoat for the scuffling Astros, whose offense left plenty to be desired during their opening-week road trip through Tampa Bay and Texas. On Friday, when the Astros host the Oakland Athletics in their home opener at Minute Maid Park, the expectation is that their play will befit a championship contender, and that their issues at the plate won't be masked by any potential disagreements with the umpiring crew.
