Real Madrid's record-equalling 73-match scoring streak ended Wednesday, as Real Betis forward Antonio Sanabria converted a header in second-half stoppage time to secure a dramatic 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Despite firing 27 shots at Betis goalkeeper Adan, Los Blancos failed to surpass the record set by Pele's Santos in the 1960s.
Wednesday's shocker marks Madrid's first scoreless outing since a 0-0 draw with Manchester City in April 2016, according to Opta.
Not even the return of Cristiano Ronaldo from a five-match suspension could help Zinedine Zidane's side. Madrid's now winless in three matches at home this season, with Wednesday's loss following draws with Levante and Valencia.
Ronaldo led the way with 12 attempts on net, while Gareth Bale came close to scoring an astonishing backheel goal midway through the second half.
Sanabria appeared to tap in the winner in the 90th minute, only for the linesman to correctly rule offside.
The 21-year-old redeemed himself moments later, finding himself all alone in the penalty area to direct his header into the far netting.
"We won games last year we didn't deserve to and now it's the reverse," Zidane told reporters, according to AFP's Kieran Canning.
Madrid is seven points behind eternal rival Barcelona in the La Liga standings after just five matches played.
