The Brazilian full-back had just completed his first season with the Italian champion when reports surfaced that he was eager to move on.
Alves was initially expected to join Manchester City and link up with his former Barcelona coach, Pep Guardiola. But a change of heart eventually led to the 34-year-old signing a two-year contract with Paris Saint-Germain.
"He made up his mind and it seemed like he was going to City, then PSG came in," Marotta told Il Giornale, as translated by Ben Gladwell of ESPN FC. "We did have a momentary disagreement because I had to remind him of his professional obligations towards Juventus."
Marotta also claimed Bonucci's desire to leave was well known based on talks with the defender, adding that a disagreement with manager Massimiliano Allegri did not motivate him to leave last summer when he signed on with AC Milan.
"I have to say that the coach was not the cause," Marotta said. "We were prepared, though, because in the usual discussions that we had had, we could sense that the player was unhappy."
