A Europa League quarter-final between Lyon and Besiktas was delayed Thursday after supporters from both clubs clashed in the away stand of Parc Olympique Lyonnais.
The French club confirmed some of its supporters sought refuge on the pitch to avoid projectiles, including fireworks, being thrown in their direction.
Other images show rival factions brawling with each other, although it is not clear how the melee started.
A photographer for Agence France-Presse said Turkish supporters "charged at a steward and injured him." Turkish fans also reportedly smashed the doors of one of Lyon's club shops prior to kickoff.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas went into the heart of the crowd trouble to help calm down the situation.
The first leg of the quarter-final, which began 45 minutes behind schedule, ended 2-1 after a late rally from the home side.
