Former Brazil left-back Filipe Luis has been appointed Monaco coach after the sacking of Sebastien Pocognoli, the Ligue 1 club announced on Monday.

Belgian Pocognoli was dismissed after just eight months in the job and failing to reach the Champions League.

The 40-year-old Filipe Luis arrives in the Principality having guided Flamengo to five major titles, including the 2025 Copa Libertadores, before leaving the club in March.

As a player, he appeared 44 times for his country and had spells at Atletico Madrid and Chelsea.

"AS Monaco are delighted to announce the appointment of Filipe Luis as Head Coach, marking the beginning of a new era," the club said.

"The 40-year-old Brazilian manager has signed with the Principality club until June 2028," they added.

Monaco begin their Ligue 1 season at Le Havre on the weekend of August 22-24.
