Verstappen appeared to be in control for pole position until power issues toward the end of the final qualifying session caused him to drop to second.

"I couldn't do my final run, either the DRS didn't open or I just lost power," Verstappen said. "But overall, to be on the front row is a good achievement."

Leclerc spun out during his first lap of Q3 but rebounded with a blistering final lap.

"I made a mistake early in Q3, and I only had one lap. But it went extremely well, and I made it stick. The car was amazing," Leclerc said.

With some upgrades made to its car, Mercedes put together a respectable showing with Lewis Hamilton finishing in sixth and George Russell taking fourth.

McLaren's Lando Norris will begin in 11th position after his final push lap during Q2 was deleted for exceeding track limits.
