Lionel Messi has been suspended for two matches after picking up a red card against Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish Super Cup final Sunday, the Spanish Football Association's competition committee announced Tuesday.
Barcelona said they'll appeal the punishment.
The incident occurred at the end of Sunday's 3-2 defeat when Messi lashed out at Asier Villalibre in the final moments of extra time.
The referee initially missed the altercation but Messi was sent off following VAR reviews of the incident.
It was the first time in Messi's illustrious career at Barcelona that he'd been sent off.
