LONDON (AP) — Everton player Martin Sherif has been fined $6,600 for “causing, permitting, or enabling” 61 bets on soccer matches.

The English Football Association said it identified six different betting accounts in Sherif’s name and stakes worth 1,974.77 pounds ($2,608) were placed between Nov. 20, 2024 and Feb. 12, 2026.

FA rules prohibit players from betting directly or indirectly, instructing, permitting, causing or enabling any person to bet on soccer matches.

The 20-year-old Sherif said he did not personally place any bets, but admitted permitting, causing or enabling betting via accounts he opened and funded.

The bets resulted in a net loss of 435.75 pounds ($575) and none were placed on teams he played for.
