Erling Haaland watched from the sidelines as Manchester City's Champions League campaign came to an end Wednesday with a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid.

Haaland was named to the bench for the playoff second leg after appearing to tweak his knee during City's 4-0 win over Newcastle United last Saturday.

City manager Pep Guardiola said Haaland didn't feel good enough to start, and he ultimately opted to rest the Norwegian entirely as Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick at the Santiago Bernabeu put the tie out of reach.

Madrid won 6-3 on aggregate to reach the round of 16.

Haaland scored twice in the first leg but couldn't prevent City from losing 3-2 at the Etihad.

Omar Marmoush played in Haaland's place, and his free-kick in second-half stoppage created the consolation goal.
