Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson and Manchester City attacker Raheem Sterling withdrew from the England squad after picking up injuries during the international break.

It was revealed Monday the pair were ruled out of England's upcoming Nations League match against Iceland.

Both returned to their respective clubs for further assessment.

Sterling was ruled out of England's loss to Belgium on Sunday with an undisclosed injury, while Henderson was forced to leave the contest at half time with leg tightness.

News of Henderson's leg issue is another blow for a Liverpool side plagued by injuries this season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez withdrew from the English squad last week. The latter suffered a knee injury expected to keep him out for a significant portion of the season.

Liverpool was already dealing with losing key members from last season's Premier League-winning team before the latest rash of injuries.

Virgil van Dijk suffered a potentially season-ending knee injury in September, while Fabinho, who has filled in for the Dutch center-back, is sidelined with a hamstring issue.

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah tested positive for COVID-19 while on international duty with Egypt.
